This rec list is for the anon who asked for angsty!Charles. It ended up being just general Cherik angst, but I hope you enjoy anyway. Secondarily, this is for Tony - who likes the way Cherik hurts.

Sacrament and Grace by yahtzee - W/ happy ending. For the anon’s request of angsty!Charles, I would read Sacrament, which is in Charles’ point of view. The fic is about Charles Xavier, a priest with a telepathic ability that allows him to comfort the parishioners in their local church. He’s considered to be blessed - however, he is severely tested when he meets and falls in love with Erik Lehnsherr, a Jewish holocaust survivor.

Down Together by irrelevant - W/o happy ending. It takes a while to be able to follow this story - it’s cross universe, mixes all sorts of canon together and written in a non-linear fashion. But it’s sufficiently angsty on Charles’ side, and leaves the sour taste in your mouth that unhappy, tragic endings tend to do. 

The Waking of The Red King by rusting_roses - WIP - This is less Charles angst and more general angst, but it is amazingly well-written and with enough sadness to keep you happy. You know I judge angst-lovers. I DON’T KNOW WHY YOU WANT TO CAUSE YOURSELVES PAIN

Lie To Me (Denial) by sky_reid - W/o happy ending - This is probably the most painful thing in this fandom, except this fandom is so filled with pain I cannot actually back up that claim. In which Charles knows that Erik is not in love with him, but continues to hope.

Never Promised You a Rose Garden by aisle_one - YMMV happy ending - Erik cheats on Charles. I hope that properly conveys how painful reading this fic was.

The Burdens We Long To Carry by arcapelago - W/ happy ending - This fic is sufficiently angsty the way most X-Men fics are angsty. It has the breaking/bridging relationship between Raven and Charles and Erik and Charles and everyone dealing with Charles’ inability to walk. 

Music, When Soft Voices Die by teacandles - W/o happy ending - People seem to think that AUs are meant to end happily. Well, you’re wrong.

I’m Never Gonna Know You But I’m Gonna Love You Anyway by ascoolsuchasi - YMMV Happy ending- Post-Cuba, slightly different.

A Measure of Progress by quietbang - W/o happy ending - This is a different kind of angst - the kind of angst we don’t really see in fandom. Charles is a homosexual, and Erik ends up having a problem with this, despite his attempts not to. 

Cause and Effect by majestrix - WIP - Charles finds himself pregnant. This story, however, explores more than that. The “is telepathy an ethical power?” argument comes into play, as well as “is who I am even an ethical issue you hypocritical bastard” as well as the issue of abortion and the failing of Raven and Charles’ relationship, all the holes in Erik’s arguments for mutant supremacy and etc., etc., etc. It hurts so good.

Love by apolesen - W/o happy ending - After Cuba, Hank and the boys deal with something besides the professor’s paralysis: his homosexuality.

My Heart Is Broken by sasha_b - W/o happy ending - Charles and Erik confront each other on all the ways they failed. The true severing of Charles and Erik’s ties.

Chronognosis by abiotrophy - YMMV W/o happy ending - Charles travels through time and meets many Eriks, in many stages of his relationship with Charles.

Apple Seeds by pprfaith - W/o happy ending - Charles is twenty-seven when he reads Romeo and Juliet, and love never lasts.

By The Waters of Lethe - YMMV ending - A completely different kind of angst, in which Charles doesn’t feel the angst at all. Charles goes insane after his telepathy backfires on him, and Erik isn’t real.

Hourglass by teacandles - W/o happy ending - The experience of loss is different for everyone. But there is always time.

Casualties of War by gryvon - YMMV ending - This is more of an pre-apocalypse fic, but there is sufficient angst, especially in the beginning. A fic where Shaw’s plan went beyond missiles and atomic bombs.

Day by Day by waterpulse - YMMV ending - After Cuba, Erik expects Charles to attempt to stop him at every turn. When he doesn’t, Erik decides to confront him.

Frozen in Time by aviss - YMMV ending - In Cuba, times stops for Charles.

Our War by akayalovesyaoi - YMMV ending - “No, apparently not,” Erik says and throws a quick glance at Charles’ wheelchair and the man in question is glad, that years of honing his telepathic skills are also very useful in hiding his emotions from showing on his face, because he feels ashamed and doesn’t want Erik to be here.

Phantom Limbs by bagheera-san - W/ happy ending - Charles attempts to erase something from his own mind. Erik finds out, and Charles starts to go insane.

Protege by ficbyfaith - W/o happy ending - One-sided Alex/Charles. Alex tries to  fill in the spaces Erik leaves… but this is not that kind of story. Probably my favourite story. (DELETED - does anyone know if we have permission to pass it around? If we do, I’d be glad to pass it on!)

The Price of Change - YMMV ending - Charles finally comes around to Erik’s way of thinking. It’s not the success Erik is thinking it would be.

These Bridges We’ve Built by alishatorn - W/ happy ending - Raven leaves her son with Charles, and a accidentally starts a sequence of events that lead to the eventual reconciliation of Charles and Erik.

Break Through The Cracks and Bring Me Home by acetamide - W/ happy ending - Erik decides that the helmet is useless if it can’t allow Emma to talk to him telepathically while defending himself from her at the same time, and so builds one that allows telepathic thoughts to go through. This isn’t a good idea. Charles prays to Erik.

Jaws by qikiqtarjuaq - W/o happy ending - Erik’s a shark, Charles is a dolphin and this is still an angst fic.
